Collin Sexton was one of the many college basketball players named in the Yahoo! Sports report in connection to Andy Miller, Christian Dawkins and ASM Sports. But per Sexton’s coach, the freshman is expected to be play for Alabama when the Crimson Tide take on the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Johnson, while meeting with reporters on Friday said that despite Sexton’s named being attached they still expect him to continue playing.
Sexton had previously been suspended for 1-game to open the 2017-18 season but was eventually cleared by the NCAA. Alabama basketball administrator Kobie Baker after it came to light that he took money from a financial adviser and tried to steer players to said adviser.
Alabama athletic director issued a statement at the time of Baker’s resignation.
“Following yesterday’s reports from New York regarding a Federal investigation of intercollegiate athletics, The University of Alabama Department of Athletics immediately initiated an internal review of our men’s basketball operations,” Byrne wrote in a statement. “As a result, we have accepted the resignation effective today of Kobie Baker, a men’s basketball administrator.
“Our review has not identified any NCAA or SEC rules violations nor the involvement of any other coach or staff member. We have notified both of the governing bodies of the actions we have taken. As always, we will continue to be proactive in our compliance efforts.”
In the Yahoo! report, Sexton is one of the players named to have had a meeting with Dawkins but it is not clear whether or not he took any money or had the meal paid for. It is not illegal for players to meet with agents.
Sexton is Alabama’s leading scorer on the season, as the freshman is averaging 18.4 points per game and has very nearly led Alabama back to the NCAA Tournament. In Joe Lunardi’s latest projections, Alabama is pegged to be a No. 8 seed. The Crimson Tide enter Saturday’s game with a 17-11 record and an 8-7 mark in the SEC.
The Crimson Tide and Razorbacks tip-off at 6 PM ET on Saturday.
