Corey Raymond compares elite DB Lejond Cavazos to former LSU great

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Eye on the Tigers, a rundown of everything happening in LSU Tigers recruiting , with Sam Spiegelman. Today, we discuss 2020 defensive back Lejond Cavazos, who made an unofficial visit to LSU last weekend. Cavazos, one of the top overall prospects in the class, has the Tigers in his unofficial top three.

Lejond Cavazos recaps LSU visit

NEW ORLEANS — It’s not always easy to make the best out of a bad situation.

Such was the case last weekend when LSU hosted elite 2020 defensive back Lejond Cavazos for an unofficial visit. Cavazos, who has routinely made his way to Baton Rouge each spring, had just received word that his former track coach, Fahim Minkah, had passed away just a day earlier. Naturally, it was a tough blow to absorb because Minkah was a mentor in Cavazos’ life for nearly a decade.

Despite the less-than-ideal circumstances, the LSU coaching staff was able to connect with Cavazos on a different level, which has the Tigers in his unofficial top two or three heading into his junior season.

“It was great,” Cavazos told SEC Country at the Pylon 7-on-7 event in New Orleans over the weekend. “They were very warming because they knew my coach had just passed. It felt like family. They were comforting me because they knew I was having a hard time. You could tell how genuine the coaches were talking to me, making my day better, and the visit went really well.

“It just showed how genuine the coaches were. They were sorry for my loss. Coach O [Ed Orgeron] brought me in and had the whole staff comfort me. Every coach was in there just helping me throughout the day, making the visit really good. … The best part was how comfortable they made me and how they treated me, and Coach O said he’d treat me like his son. That’s something [LSU safety] Grant [Delpit] has said before. It felt like a family coaching staff and I could really see myself there.”

Of course, Cavazos is nowhere close to making a decision. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound versatile defensive back has a spring full of unofficial stops.

Early on, he has a lead group of LSU, Ohio State and Alabama, which is subject to change as he visits other campuses. Consider this most-recent trip to Baton Rouge as something that Cavazos expects to dwell on throughout the process, though.

“That’s definitely a top two or three program for me. They’re ‘DBU,’ they produce defensive backs and that’s where I want to be at,” he said. “This was definitely what I was looking for — a staff that’s like family for me. They can get on me at practice, but aside from football stuff, they’re there for you.”

Cavazos spent part of last Friday’s visit in Corey Raymond’s office, where LSU’s defensive backs coach broke down film with the rising junior prospect.

Unlike most other programs, Raymond prefers the tall, rangy Cavazos, who possesses 4.4 speed, as an outside cornerback, one of the team’s thinnest positions heading into the 2018 season. In breaking down the tape, Raymond saw a lot of parallels between Cavazos’ game and a former LSU standout.

“I went with Coach Raymond and watched some film to see where I see myself in college,” Cavazos detailed. “I’ll probably play cornerback in college because of my speed. It’s my biggest asset and I could probably play a lot of man. LSU runs a lot of man-to-man [coverage].

“He [Raymond] said it’s a great fit for me because I’m long and I’m fast like Donte Jackson. He said I reminded him of that with how fast he was, how quick his feet were and his eyes. He played with his hands and his technique, he could see me playing just like that.”
