Dan Wolken: Horned Frogs’ success shouldn’t be a shock

The No. 8 TCU Horned Frogs started the season unranked before climbing into the top 10.

TCU didn’t have much national attention after a down year last season. Dan Wolken of USA Today says ignoring the Frogs was a mistake from the start.

“While it’s true we didn’t exactly see this coming, we should have expected nothing less,” Wolken said.

Citing TCU’s record in years after a losing season — 11-1, 12-1 and now 4-0 — Wolken says the Frogs feed off Gary Patterson’s energy. Patterson was hampered by a knee injury last season, and got knee replacement surgery in the offseason.

Now, he’s filled with the fury and boundless energy that turned TCU “from a novelty act on the national stage to consistent achiever in a Power Five conference,” as Wolken wrote.

The Frogs have staked their reputation on defying the odds. In 2014, an unranked TCU tried to  “prove them wrong.” In 2015, with TCU second in the preseason polls, the mantra was “ prove them right.”

In 2017, the slogan is “Eyes Up, Keep Climbing.” If history continues like it has, TCU will climb to very high heights this year.
