West Virginia will certainly have a chance to upset TCU, but the numbers aren’t in Dana Holgorsen’s favor.
The Mountaineer head coach is 5-15 against the AP Top 25, according to stats from cfbstats.com.
Holgorsen hasn’t beaten an AP Top 25 team since 2014. The only season in which Holgorsen held a winning record against AP Top 25 opponents was 2011.
During a particularly brutal stretch in 2015, West Virginia played four AP Top 25 teams in a row, two of them in the Top 10, and three of those games were played on the road.
TCU is running smoothly right now, and WVU is looking a little vulnerable against the run. The Mountaineer offense is looking solid, but there’s no telling what will happen on the road against a defense like TCU’s.
West Virginia won’t be favored in this game. TCU has better wins, and the Mountaineers are vulnerable at key places. That doesn’t discount them, they just aren’t likely to win this game. A loss here does not derail an entire season. There’s plenty of time to catch fire in conference play, and the lone West Virginia loss was an out of conference loss against a top 15 team.
