Duke-Virginia Tech basketball preview
Duke is rolling heading into its matchup against Virginia Tech, having won the last five games in a row.
The Blue Devils had lost two straight and three out of four games prior to that stretch, but they got back on track with a road victory against Georgia Tech without Bagley. They’ve since played their best ball of the season. Duke will look to continue that momentum Monday night at on the road home before a big showdown against North Carolina.
Duke still comes into the game with a 12-4 ACC record. That’s good enough for second place in the ACC standings and one game back of Virginia, who the Blue Devils lost to earlier in the season.
Virginia leads the conference with a 15-1 record. Mike Krzyzewski’s won’t win the ACC regular season title, but winning Monday would help the Blue Devils earn chase a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament. The top four teams in the ACC regular season will only need to win three games in three days in order to win the conference tournament.
Any team that finishes in fifth place or lower will need to capture four victories in four days to win the ACC Tournament. Heading into Monday, NC State sits in fifth place at 9-6.
Overall, Duke is 24-5, but Coach K’s only out-of-conference loss this season came against St. John’s. They also lost to Boston College, N.C. State, Virginia and North Carolina.
Bagley leads the Blue Devils with 21.1 points per game. Without him, senior guard Grayson Allen posted 23 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds in the victory over Georgia Tech. He’s been on fire ever since.
Virginia Tech heads into Monday coming off a tough loss against Louisville. The Hokies beat rival Virginia, 61-60, on Saturday, handing the Cavaliers their first ACC loss of the season earlier.
The Hokies started the conference slate losing their first two games and four of the first six, but since then, Virginia Tech has won seven of 10 in the ACC since then.
That put them at 9-7 in the conference and in position to receive a bye in the ACC Tournament. A victory over Duke, though, would be another huge resume booster and help ensure Virginia Tech stays in position to receive a bye in the conference tournament.
Five players average double digits in scoring for Virginia Tech. Junior guard Justin Robinson leads the team with 13.8 points per contest, and junior forward Kerry Blackshear Jr., averages the most rebounds per contest for Virginia Tech with 6.0. Robinson also leads the Hokies with 5.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
Duke and Virginia Tech also played on Feb. 14. Over the last five seasons, Duke has dominated the series, going 6-1 against Virginia Tech.
But last season, the Hokies blew out the Blue Devils, winning 89-75, on Dec. 31, 2016. Before Valentine’s Day, Duke’s last victory in the series came on Jan. 9, 2016.
Dating back to his days as coach at Marquette, Buzz Williams is 1-4 all-time against Krzyzewski.
