ESPN’s Booger McFarland says Baker Mayfield lacks ‘character’ of franchise QB

Baker Mayfield has showcased plenty of talent on the football field. Some experts, however, remain skeptical about the personality of the former Oklahoma quarterback and 2017 Heisman Trophy winner.

ESPN analyst Booger McFarland is the latest to doubt Mayfield’s capabilities in the NFL.

McFarland said during an ESPN broadcast on Thursday that while Mayfield has the talent to enjoy a lengthy professional career, he doesn’t believe the Sooners’ signal-caller has the “character” needed to become a franchise quarterback.

From McFarland:

“To me, his talent level will keep him in the league a long time. Because I think his talent level is that good. Is he ever going to be the guy that you can put your franchise on his back and he will take you to the promised land? I just think you have to have a certain character, a certain personality to do that. And in my opinion, I just don’t think he has it. I could be wrong. I just don’t think he has that.”

Mayfield, for all of his endeavors, established himself as one of the most polarizing players in college football during the 2017 season.

His antics began with planting the University of Oklahoma flag on the field at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio after the Sooners defeated Ohio State in September. Mayfield also infamously made an obscene gesture towards Kansas players in November — resulting in him being benched for the start of Oklahoma’s final home game of the season vs. West Virginia.

All of that, however, hasn’t kept Mayfield from rising up the big board to becoming a top-5 pick in numerous mock drafts. And with the competitive edge he showed at Oklahoma, there’s no reason to believe that attitude can’t propel him towards great things at the professional level — even if some see his swagger as a warning sign.

The 2018 NFL Draft will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas from April 26-28. Mayfield announced on Monday that he will watch the event with his family from his home in Austin, Texas rather than attend in person.
