Oklahoma 4-star quarterback commit Spencer Rattler resembles another talented quarterback in college football, according to ESPN.
ESPN’s Tom Luginbill came up with comparisons for some of the top quarterbacks in the Class of 2019. He said the Phoenix (Ariz.) Pinnacle passer reminds him of Florida State’s Deondre Francois, in part because of his throwing motion.
This comparison is primarily due to both players’ effortless release of the football — a smooth, loose and compact stroke that jumps off their hand. Rattler is a slightly better runner than Francois, which is an ideal fit for Oklahoma’s offense.
It’s a kind comparison. Francois had a breakout season as a redshirt freshman in 2016. He completed 58.8 percent of his passes for 3,350 yards and 20 touchdowns with 7 interceptions, and he helped lead the Seminoles to a 10-3 record and a win in the Orange Bowl. However, he missed most of the 2017 season after suffer a major knee injury in Florida State’s season opener against Alabama.
If Rattler could have that level of success early in his career at Oklahoma, he would be on his way to a good career. But he’ll have to fight his way up a crowded quarterback depth chart. The Sooners would still have Kyler Murray when Rattler got on campus in 2019, as well as 4-star 2018 signee Tanner Mordecai. Like Francois, a redshirt year may be in Rattler’s future.
Luginbill repeatedly called Rattler an “ideal” fit in the Sooners’ offense because of his dual-threat abilities.
To be able to redshirt would be ideal, but Rattler’s physical ability could find him in the No. 2 spot behind Kyler Murray. He is an ideal fit for the run/pass option game and could be used as a designated runner more than Baker Mayfield was.
Rattler completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 3,946 yards, 45 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as a junior in 2017. He is currently the No. 33 overall prospect and the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the country in 2019, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
