Auburn is in the discussion for inclusion in the College Football Playoff later this year. However, the Tigers have no margin for error.
That’s the opinion relayed by ESPN’s Heather Dinich, who included Auburn among one-loss teams that have no wiggle room the rest of the year if they want to be among the country’s top four late in the year. The other schools featured in the category were Ohio State, USC and Oklahoma State.
Here’s more from Dinich’s piece:
4. Auburn (4-1): If the Tigers win out, they’re a lock for a top four spot, but they have to avoid a letdown in back-to-back road games at LSU and Arkansas heading into the first rankings.
Of course, Auburn should be considered among the country’s best if it wins out. Running the table would mean the Tigers enjoyed possibly two victories against Georgia and a win against Alabama. Auburn’s lone blemish would be a 14-6 loss to Clemson on Sept. 9, a result that has aged well in recent weeks with Clemson’s continued dominance.
Things look good for Auburn. In recent weeks, the Tigers’ offense has come alive during blowout victories against Missouri (51-14) and Mississippi Stat (49-10)e. Finally, Auburn looks like the team most expected when pundits pegged the Tigers to challenge Alabama in the SEC West.
