GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida running back Malik Davis and offensive lineman Brett Heggie earned weekly honors from the SEC on Monday.
Davis was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after rushing for a career-high 124 yards and scoring two touchdowns in the Gators’ 38-24 win over Vanderbilt. Heggie was named the conference’s Offensive Lineman of the Week.
Davis has established himself as the Gators’ lead back over the past couple weeks. The 5-foot-11 running back from Tampa leads Florida with 319 rushing yards and is averaging 7.4 yards per carry — the fourth-best mark in the SEC. He is one of 11 players in the SEC that has multiple runs of at least 30 yards this season.
Davis became the first Florida freshman to record at least 100 yards and 2 touchdowns in a game since Jeff Demps did so against Arkansas on Oct. 4, 2008.
He scored the game-sealing touchdown of Florida’s 38-24 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday by taking a handoff on fourth and 1 and taking it down the right sideline for a 39-yard touchdown.
Heggie, a redshirt freshman, has started all four games at left guard and has been part of an improving offensive line. That was evidenced on Saturday with the Gators running for a season-high 249 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns against Vanderbilt.
It’s the second straight week in which the Gators had earned weekly conference honors, as CeCe Jefferson was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week last week.
