Every month, SEC Country will outline three items the Florida coaches need to accomplish on the recruiting trail. At the end of the month, we revisit the list to see if the Gators checked off any boxes.
Florida’s recruiting to-do list for October publishes Tuesday. Here’s a recap of the September goals:
Land 4-star WR Anthony Schwartz
The Gators and others will have to keep chasing the nation’s fastest recruit. Anthony Schwartz planned to make his decision in September after visiting his top 5 schools in late July and attending the Florida-Tennessee game on Sept. 16.
After that last trip, however, Schwartz told SEC Country he wanted to take a step back from the recruiting process and commit after his senior season. Certainly not what the Gators we’re hoping to hear, but they’re still in front for Schwartz and I don’t see them losing the lead.
More stellar play from Florida commits
After dropping the season opener to Michigan and then missing Week 2 because of Hurrrican Irma, it was important for Florida’s commits to play well on the gridiron to make the Gators attractive on the recruiting trail.
UF quarterback pledge Matt Corral threw for 457 yards and scored 7 touchdowns in his team’s 56-0 win last Friday. Running back commits Iverson Clement and Dameon Pierce are both churning out 100-yard games and future Florida receivers Ja’Marr Chase have made highlight-reel plays all season.
Get a big turnout for Tennessee
The Florida-Tennessee game was the Gators’ first big recruiting weekend of the season, and it didn’t disappoint. More than a dozen top-200 overall prospects attended the game, including top targets Schwartz, Patrick Surtain Jr., William Barnes, Mark Pope and Richard Jibunor.
“That was definitely the greatest experience I’ve ever had,” Barnes said afterward. “I was down there in the end zone when Tyrie caught that pass. … We were all just dancing and jumping around. It was just the greatest feeling I’ve ever felt in a while. That’s definitely something that opened my eyes up about Florida. The fans are just fantastic people.”
Florida will have another big weekend for the LSU game Saturday. Here’s an early look at the expected visitors.
