Florida State-Notre Dame basketball preview

Florida State is looking for its first victory at Notre Dame on its fourth attempt.

Florida State (17-7, 6-6) will be facing a Notre Dame (14-10, 4-7) squad ravished by injuries. The Irish have been without their leading scorer, senior forward Bonzie Colson, since the first week of January.

Notre Dame’s second leading scorer, senior guard Matt Farrell, missed five games within the last month.

Without Colson, Notre Dame has gone 3-7, and without both Colson and Farrell, the Irish are 1-4.

Farrell returned last Saturday against N.C. State, but Notre Dame still lost in a lopsided manner, 76-58. However, the Irish earned their first win since Jan. 6 when they defeated Boston College 96-85.

TJ Gibbs is averaging 16.2 points and is shooting 82 percent from the free throw line for Notre Dame.

Florida State is 3-2 in its last five games, winning against Georgia Tech, Miami and Louisville while losing to Wake Forest and Virginia.

FSU had a 32-22 advantage at halftime over Virginia but couldn’t hang out for the road upset.  Junior guard Terance Mann was 1 of 4 from the floor and scored a season-low three points.

Mann leads Florida State in points (14.9) and rebounds (5.8) per game.

“If there’s one thing about the ACC, you can’t have a pity party. You got to learn from your shortcomings. I thought we put ourselves in a pretty good position against a very good basketball team and came up short,” Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said to the AP.

Florida State averages 83.5 points per game, while Notre Dame averages 76.2 points per game.

Florida State allows 72.7 points per game, while Notre Dame gives up 68 points per game.

Florida State is ninth in the ACC standings. Meanwhile, Notre Dame is in a three-way tie for third-worst in the conference.

In CBS Sports expert Jerry Palm’s current bracket predictions, Florida State is a No. 7 seed in the West (vs. No. 10 Houston).

Florida State is an 8-seed in Joe Lunardi’s bracketology. Now at No. 22 in BPI, the Seminoles are now projected to square off with 9-seed Alabama in the East region.

Per BracketMatrix.com, Florida State is included in 107 of 108 brackets surveyed. A win at Notre Dame would help to strengthen Florida State’s resume as the regular season hits the stretch run.

Notre Dame has a 59.9 percent chance of defeating Florida State according to ESPN’s Basketball Power Index.
