GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Tyrie Cleveland caught a pass near the left sideline late in the third quarter from Feleipe Franks on Saturday, turned around and made his way upfield before being brought down by Vanderbilt’s Donovan Sheffield.
After a moment on the ground after the play ended, Cleveland hobbled off the field and didn’t return for the remainder of the 38-24 win.
Florida coach Jim McElwain said after the game that Cleveland suffered an ankle injury on the play. Add that to the shoulder injury from the Kentucky game, and McElwain is uncertain of Cleveland’s availability for the Gators’ homecoming game next Saturday against LSU.
“I don’t know if he’ll go this week,” McElwain said after the game. “I would think it’d be one that you’d want to go play in, but time will tell.”
Should Cleveland be unavailable, the Gators would be losing their No. 1 receiver. Cleveland paces the team with 15 catches for 326 yards and 2 touchdowns. He had a team-best 67 yards on two catches against Vanderbilt, including a 49-yard catch at the end of the first half from Franks that set up a field goal.
After Cleveland, Florida would be relying on a combination of senior Brandon Powell, redshirt junior Dre Massey, sophomores Freddie Swain and Josh Hammond, and freshman Kadarius Toney to fill in the void at receiver. Tight ends Moral Stephens and DeAndre Goolsby would likely get more reps in the passing game, as well.
In other injury news:
- As we previously reported, quarterback Luke Del Rio is out for the season after injuring his collarbone. He will have surgery Monday.
- Powell “made it through” the game despite sore ribs. He had 1 catch for 11 yards. “I don’t think he was himself today, from a standpoint I think he was still dinged up, but did some good things for us,” McElwain said.
- Defensive tackle Khairi Clark played despite a shin injury but was limited with his reps. Freshmen T.J. Slaton and Elijah Conliffe saw extended playing time.
- Linebacker Kylan Johnson played for the first time since the season opener and recorded 3 tackles.
