Frienemies for a day: Arkansas’ Austin Allen has high praise for Saturday opponent, South Carolina QB Jake Bentley

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas quarterback Austin Allen has high praise for his counterpart this coming Saturday.

Allen, a senior, got to know South Carolina quarterback Jake Bentley well when the two shared a room at the Manning Passing Academy last summer. The two were among 45 quarterbacks and wide receivers from various schools who served as counselors at the Louisiana-based camp last June.

“I got to hang out with him a lot,” Allen said. “Love that guy.”

Bentley started seven games for the Gamecocks as a freshman in 2016. He capped that season by completing 32 of his 43 attempts for 390 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Birmingham Bowl. That performance gave Gamecocks fans hope for the future despite a 6-7 finish. Through five games this season, he’s thrown for 1,257 yards and 9 touchdowns with 4 interceptions.

“You see what he did last year as a true freshman and what he’s doing this year,” Allen said. “He’s a heck of a player. He throws the ball well. He’s a gritty, tough guy and the nicest guy you’ll ever meet off the field.”

Allen isn’t the only member of the Razorbacks impressed with Bentley. Defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads knows he has a tall task in preparing to game plan for the sophomore quarterback.

“[Bentley] is a good player,” Rhoads said. “He’s a coach’s son. He understands their offense very thoroughly, and he’s a guy they lean on. He’s a tough guy. If you give him space, he’s going to run it and he’s going to dip his shoulder. At the same time, if he sees a receiver that’s wide open he’s going to let it fly in a scramble situation and can get a big touchdown because of it.”

Arkansas faces South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., at 3 p.m. CT (4 p.m. ET) on Saturday.
