FSU legend Charlie Ward hired as high school basketball coach in Tallahassee

Charlie Ward is making another transition from the gridiron to the hardwood, this time as a coach.

The former dual-sport Florida State star is back in Tallahassee as he has been hired as the boys basketball coach at Florida High, according to Democrat writer Brian Miller.

This is the first basketball head coaching position for Ward, who spent the last four years as the head football coach at Pensacola’s Booker T. Washington High School.

While at Florida State, as a quarterback Ward won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship, while also reaching the Elite Eight in basketball as a point guard.

Ward bypassed the NFL to play 11 seasons in the NBA with the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets.

Ward served two seasons as an assistant coach for the Rockets, before getting hired in 2007 as an assistant coach on the varsity boys basketball team at Westbury Christian School.

Ward also spent six seasons as the head coach of Westbury’s varsity football team.

Having learned under coaches such as Pat Riley, Greg Popovich and Jeff Van Gundy, Ward believes he has the basketball experience to guide Florida High in the right direction.

“I’ve played 11 years of (NBA) basketball and coached two,” Ward told the Democrat.. “I’ve been coaching football for the past nine years. It’s a bit of a change, but I’ve been helping out with Booker behind the scenes.

“My (football) win-loss record isn’t the best, but I’ve been able to help provide structure and get some things done at the programs. This may be the first time I’ve had a stable situation.”

Being recently hired by FSU President John Thrasher as a university ambassador opened the door for Ward to scratch his hoops itch.

“President Thrasher and those guys were helpful getting me to the area,” Ward said. “While I was thinking about that and what to do at the university, (Florida High athletic director) Tyrone (McGriff) and I were talking about something else. At that time, I wasn’t looking for a job. God opened the door. We’re looking forward to the opportunity.”

This reunion between Ward and the Tallahassee community that adores him is a beautiful thing.
