Impact analysis: LB Jammal Abrams will be a physical presence for Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida landed its first linebacker commit of the 2019 class this weekend.

Jammal Abrams pledged to the Gators on Saturday after attending Junior Day. He will be the seventh recruit from Alabama to sign with Florida since 2016.

Here’s a closer look at  the new Gators commit.

Position: Inside linebacker

Height: 6-foot-3

Weight: 224 pounds

High school: Jackson-Olin (Birmingham, Ala.)

Ranking: No. 18 inside linebacker (247Sports composite)

Details of his decision: Abrams received an offer from Florida on Jan. 12 and has been in contact with linebackers coach Christian Robinson and Sal Sunseri, his primary recruiter. Earlier this week, Abrams received his family’s blessing to commit to the Gators and decided to pull the trigger while in Gainesville, citing his relationship with the coaches and the atmosphere on campus.

How he fits in: Abrams passes the look test and is one of the physically impressive prospects in the Class of 2019. Abrams said the coaches haven’t specified how he’ll fit into their 3-4 scheme yet, but he will likely play inside linebacker. Abrams shows excellent vision on film. He does a great job of locating ball carriers in the backfield, exploiting the gap and finishing it off with sure tackling.

Chances of playing early: Linebacker is not a big need for the Gators in this cycle. They could have as many as 11 returning players at the position, depending on whether starter David Reese turns pro after his junior season. If Reese decides to leave early for the NFL draft, Abrams will have a chance to compete for playing time at one of the two inside linebacker spots.
