Indiana-Penn State preview, keys to game

Penn State leads Indiana 19-1 in the all-time series. The Nittany Lions won the first 13 games in the series from 1993 to 2012. Indiana picked up its only win in the series in 2013, when the Hoosiers won 44-24 at home.

Since Indiana’s win, the Nittany Lions have won the last three meetings. In 2014, Penn State won 13-7. In 2015, the Nittany Lions had a 29-7 win. In 2016, Penn State won on the road, 45-31. The Hoosiers actually outgained Penn State 454 to 409 last year. However, the Nittany Lions finished plus-3 in turnovers to get the win. Penn State continued to win through the rest of the regular season to win the Big Ten East. The Nittany Lions eventually beat Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game to earn a spot in the Rose Bowl

Indiana and coach Tom Allen are 2-1 this season. The Hoosiers are 0-1 in the conference after losing at home to then-No. 2 Ohio State, 49-21, in Week 1. Indiana then beat Virginia (34-17) and Georgia Southern (52-17).

QB Richard Lagow is 51-for-88 passing for 564 yards, 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Peyton Ramsey is 21-for-31 for 238 yards, 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. Simmie Cobbs is the quarterbacks’ top target this season. After three games, Cobbs has 18 receptions for 228 yards and 2 touchdowns.

On the ground, RB Morgan Ellison has picked up 257 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 44 attempts.

Penn State, meanwhile, is 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions are led by James Franklin, who’s in his fourth season.

Heisman candidate Saquon Barkley has 518 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns, averaging 7.8 yards per attempt. Barkley also leads the Big Ten with 335 receiving yards on 23 catches.

Through the air, QB Trace McSorley is 82-for-124 passing for 1,037 yards, 10 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He also has 40 carries for 198 yards and 2 scores. McSorley found WR Juwan Johnson for a 7-yard touchdown to beat Iowa on the last play of the game, 21-19, in Week 4.

Penn State opened its season by beating Akron, 52-0. The Nittany Lions then beat rival Pitt (33-14), Georgia State (56-0) and Iowa (21-19).
