After the tumultuous back-and-forth of last season’s Florida and LSU matchup that eventually was played in Baton Rouge and ended with a Florida win, the Gators program decided that this year’s game, back in The Swamp, would be homecoming.
That scheduling led to some calls about Florida being petty as well as some joking words being tossed around from Florida players.
But Gators head coach Jim McElwain said at SEC Media days that he had no involvement or even knowledge of the decision, and he reiterated that point on Wednesday during his weekly appearance on the SEC coaches conference call. But, that still doesn’t mean he doesn’t think the whole situation is funny, especially with how big a deal fans and media made about the Gators choice for homecoming opponent.
“I still laugh about it,” McElwain said after again stating he had no say in the matter. “What creates the buzz is whatever’s good.
McElwain went on to discuss that the preparation for the opponent is really no different whether it’s homecoming or not and that Florida has played a variety of SEC teams for the special event in years past.
“I’m not even sure the team knows it’s homecoming,” he said. “That’s funny stuff.”
