Kansas wins heart-stopper over Texas Tech, 14th-straight Big 12 title

In a thriller in Lubbock, No. 8 Kansas locked up at least a share of the Big 12 title with a 74-72 win over No. 6 Texas Tech.

The Jayhawks are now 23-6 overall and 12-4 in Big 12 play, while the Red Raiders dropped to 22-7 and 10-6 respectively.

3 Who Mattered

Svi Mykhailiuk: The Jayhawks’ senior shooting guard scored 21 points, including a team-high 15 points in the first half. He was 6-of-14 from the field and 4-of-10 from 3-point range while also pulling down five rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Devonte’ Graham: Graham was magnificent down the stretch — his senior leadership translating into championship DNA. The point guard finished with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting. He also had three rebounds and four assists.

Zhaire Smith: With Keenan Evans nursing the toe injury, Smith led the Red Raiders in scoring with 20 points. He was an efficient 6-of-11 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. He also had five offensive rebounds, a steal and a block.

Observations

The outside shot is there for Kansas: The Jayhawks finished 11-of-25 from 3-point range against Texas Tech — the fourth-straight game Kansas has shot 31 percent or better from deep.

Keenan Evans looks like a shadow of himself: For the second-straight game, the star point guard for Texas Tech looked like a shell as he plays through a toe injury. After scoring just two points in a loss at Oklahoma State, Evans scored six on 1-of-6 shooting against the Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks still need help on the glass: Kansas was outrebounded by Texas Tech 34-29. In Big 12 play, the Jayhawks have only won the battle on the boards three times.

Turning Point

The Number: 14

Well, that’s now 14 straight Big 12 titles for Kansas under head coach Bill Self.

Throughout the duration of that streak, the Jayhawks have won at least one NCAA Tournament game in all but one year.

The streak also includes six Elite Eights, two Final Fours and a national title.
