Texas Tech’s surprise run to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament has to feel especially sweet indeed for senior guard Keenan Evans.
The Red Raiders weren’t expected to amount to much this year, but an inspired effort — thanks in no small part to Evans’ play — has them knocking on the door of the Final Four. This is by far the best team Evans has played on at Texas Tech, and you can hear in his voice how happy he sounds to still be in the hunt for a national title. He appeared on CBS Sports HQ and talked about his excitement level as of Monday night.
“Excited is not even the answer,” Evans said. “Just filled with joy, just a great feeling in my senior year to be going to the Sweet 16.”
“Our chemistry is great,” Evans said. “Just starting out, him getting here in the summer, and just going to meetings with coach Beard, and him telling me, Zhaire’s an above-the-rim guy, he’s not a big man but he can still go get the ball. So in practice and in drills I always work with him on backdoors.”
The whole interview is worth the watch, especially as Evans describes what went through his mind on those highlight plays. It’s clear the senior is locked in and ready to play in the second weekend of the tournament for the first time in his career.
