Kentucky basketball recruiting: Updates on E.J. Montgomery, 2019 targets James Wiseman, D.J. Jeffries

Kentucky has one major target left in the 2018 class, but much of the recruiting conversation has already flipped to 2019.

Here’s the latest Kentucky basketball recruiting notebook:

James Wiseman

John Calipari was in Memphis on Wednesday to see top 2019 target James Wiseman. Our own Kyle Tucker was there to see Wiseman on Monday. The Memphis East star, coached by former NBA great Penny Hardaway, is the No. 1 prospect in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports.

Wiseman shows similarities to former Kentucky star Karl-Anthony Towns. He had 40 points and 14 rebounds in a scrimmage.

We talked to Wiseman, his mom, Hardaway and people close to the program in an exclusive look at where Kentucky stands with the top prospect and what his thoughts are on reclassifying.

As for Hardaway, he could soon find himself on college sidelines. There’s been speculation that Wiseman could follow his coach to Ole Miss, or possibly Memphis if the job came open. One person close to the East High program cleared that up.

E.J. Montgomery

Kentucky is still locked in on the top available big man in the 2018 class. E.J. Montgomery, after taking recent unofficial visits to Duke and North Carolina, will be in Lexington, Ky., this weekend.

Montgomery will take his Kentucky unofficial visit Saturday when the Wildcats host Missouri at 8:15 p.m. ET.

The former Auburn commit from Marietta, Ga., is the the 12th overall prospect and the No. 3 power forward in the 2018 class, according to 247Sports. Montgomery is listed at 6-foot-10 and 200 pounds.

Evan Daniels of 247Sports caught up with Montgomery after his Duke visit. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski compared the Blue Devils’ incoming class to the Golden State Warriors, according to Montgomery. Four of the top-10 players in the 2018 class are committed to Duke.

D.J. Jeffries

D.J. Jeffries, a teammate of Wiseman’s on Team Penny on the AAU circuit, was paid a visit by Calipari on Wednesday, according to Ben Roberts of the Herald-Leader.

The 6-7 small forward from Olive Branch, Miss., is the 26th-ranked prospect in the 2018 class. He holds an offer from Kentucky, and the Wildcats are favored to land him. Jeffries did nothing to downplay that idea when we spoke to him at the Marshall County Hoopfest in December.

“People in Kentucky, they love their basketball team,” Jeffries said. “I feel like that’s something I probably want to be a part of.”
