Kentucky football: Expect to see more of Lynn Bowden, Mark Stoops says

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Lynn Bowden played about 20 snaps Saturday against Eastern Michigan, but many Kentucky fans were asking why the No. 1 signee in the 2017 class isn’t playing more. Bowden has flashed potential at times, but his role has been inconsistent.

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said Bowden is still picking up the offense — a typical freshman learning curve. Stoops said Bowden’s 20 snaps on Saturday will hopefully increase to 30, 40 or more snaps per game as the season goes on.

“You see those guys that there’s just something about him when he gets the ball,” Stoops said. “You see he’s effortless, but he has great balance, he is running fast. And it’s just all the nuances. He’s also very new to that position. I mean, he’s not used to playing wide receiver.”

Asked if there was hesitancy to play him more right now, “Yes and no,” Stoops said.

Bowden played quarterback at Warren G. Harding High School in Youngstown, Ohio — the same high school as former stars Maurice Clarett, Mario Manningham and Daniel “Boom” Herron. Steve Arnold has coached all of those players.

“Lynn is at the top of that class,” Arnold told SEC Country earlier this year.

Bowden’s versatility made him the No. 4 athlete nationally in the 2017 class, according to 247Sports composite rankings. He was Kentucky’s top-ranked commit.

Kentucky has already used Bowden in a number of roles: running out of the wildcat, passing out of the wildcat, lining up as a slot receiver and returning kicks and punts.

“I love his attitude,” Stoops said. “He wants to do well. He’s one of those guys, he wants to block hard and he wants to be efficient whether he’s getting the ball or not. There’s some technique things that he’ll get better and better at.”

Bowden has two catches this season for 19 yards. As a newcomer to playing receiver, Bowden said he’s working with quarterback Stephen Johnson every day after practice.

“He’s special with what he does,” Johnson said. “Just being able to run his routes so smooth and the great hands he has. We really need to target him a little bit more.”
