USC has added another linebacker to its strong 2018 recruiting class.
St. John Bosco (Bellflower) linebacker Spencer Gilbert committed to the Trojans on Friday as a preferred walk-on, per Chris Trevino of 247 Sports.
Gilbert led St. John Bosco in tackles last season.
The 6-foot, 215 pound linebacker has strong USC ties and good athlete genes. His mother, Caryl, is the director of the Trojans’ track and field program. She was also an all-american sprinter at UCLA. His father, Greg, was a linebacker at Alabama.
Gilbert has an opportunity to earn a scholarship with the Trojans. He will have his work cut out for him, though. USC signed five linebackers on National Signing Day, including linebackers Palaie Gaoteote and Solomon Tuliaupupu who both made DieHards’ Top 10 Pac-12 football signees.
