Louisville interim AD reportedly meets with Xavier’s Chris Mack

Louisville is zeroing in on its top candidate to take over its men’s basketball program.

Interim athletic director Vince Tyra reportedly met with Xavier coach Chris Mack on short notice Tuesday, according to Drew Deener of ESPN 680. Mack is believed to be the top candidate for the position in wake of the most tumultuous season in program history.

Mack is the all-time winningest coach in Xavier history with 212 wins and has made the NCAA Tournament eight times over the course of his nine-year tenure. The Musketeers were bounced from The Big Dance in the Round of 32 by Florida State on Sunday.

Louisville’s season came to an end Tuesday night with a 79-56 loss to Mississippi State in the NIT quarterfinals. It was a season that began with the firing of Rick Pitino in the midst of the FBI investigation into college basketball, and the naming of assistant David Padgett as interim coach two days before preseason practice.

The Cardinals finished the ACC Tournament with a 22-13 record, but were left on the outside looking in for the NCAA Tournament when Selection Sunday rolled around.

Padgett said Tuesday night that he had “not spoken a word with anybody about the future of this program or myself.”
