Louisville-Murray State preview, keys to the game

Louisville should look to take care of business swiftly against the overmatched Racers in Week 5.

The Cardinals bounced back from a 47-21 defeat at the hands of Clemson in Week 3 with an easy victory over Kent State last weekend. The game provided Louisville a chance to glimpse the future, with freshman quarterback Javon Pass playing several series in the second half and freshman defenders XXX and Russ Yeast receiving praise from coach Bobby Petrino for their performance. This week’s matchup should provide another opportunity for Louisville’s young talent to show what it can do.

Before Louisville pulls its starters from the game, quarterback Lamar Jackson will look to continue his campaign for a second Heisman Trophy in as many seasons. Through four games, Jackson has passed for over 1,300 yards and rushed for over 300 while accounting for 10 total touchdowns. Jackson’s average of 431 yards of total offense per game ranks second in the country.

Behind Jackson, the Louisville offense as a whole has thrived this season, averaging over 550 total yards a game. That ranks 8th in the FBS. The Louisville passing attack ranks 7th at 365.5 yards per game.

The one Achilles heel for the Cardinal offense this season has been turnovers. Louisville has already turned the ball over eight times through four games. That is tied for the 20th-most in the FBS.

One key in a game like this one for Louisville is keeping all of its regular starters healthy — especially heading into a short week. And, speaking of injuries, Louisville could get star cornerback Jaire Alexnader back this weekend for the first time since its Week 1 game against Purdue, when Alexander injured his knee.

A few other Cardinals, namely wide receiver Jaylen Smith and defensive tackle Drew Bailey, enter the game dinged up. Both players missed last week’s Kent State game and might be held out against Murray State in anticipation of the matchup at N.C. State.
