LSU football practice report: Grant Delpit returns, Jonathan Giles absent

BATON ROUGE, La. — One starter returned to action and another was absent when the LSU football team took the practice field for the fifth time this spring on Tuesday.

After missing two practices with an undisclosed injury, sophomore safety Grant Delpit participated in a full-contact jersey on Tuesday. A returning starter in LSU’s uncharacteristically thin secondary, Delpit was expected to miss a week or two with his injury according to coach Ed Orgeron, so his appearance comes as a bit of a surprise.

Countering Delpit’s return, wide receiver Jonathan Giles was not on the field for the media-viewing period of practice Tuesday. Named a starter after sitting out his transfer year in 2017, Giles will wear No. 7 for the Tigers in 2018, following in the footsteps of Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Leonard Fournette and DJ Chark. No indication has been given for the reason of Giles’ absence, and it is possible that he returned to practice after the media session ended.

In addition to Giles, junior college transfer Damien Lewis was not with his teammates Tuesday. An offensive lineman who Orgeron has raved about this spring, Lewis is expected to push Ed Ingram and Garrett Brumfield for playing time at guard.

Senior safety Ed Paris did not practice on Tuesday but was on the field in street clothes watching his teammates. Paris is still rehabbing from an ACL injury that forced him to take a medical redshirt in 2017.

A handful of LSU football players donned non-contact gold jerseys. Those players included: safety Todd Harris, linebacker Michael Divinity, defensive lineman Glen Logan, running back Lanard Fournette and offensive tackle Austin Deculus. Those five players participated in drills but will not compete in the full-contact portions of practice.

Defensive backs Kary Vincent Jr. and Kristian Fulton practiced Tuesday after sitting out on Thursday. Fulton is wrapped up in an eligibility appeal, while Vincent runs track in the spring.
