D.J. Durkin’s coaching career got started on Urban Meyer’s staff in 2002 as a graduate assistant at Bowling Green. A decade-and-a-half later, the two are squaring off as head coaches in one of the best divisions in college football.
Durkin, 39, is in his second season as Maryland’s coach. His Terrapins will face Meyer’s Ohio State team on Saturday (4 p.m. ET, FOX) in Columbus.
Leading up to the matchup, Durkin is showing just how highly he thinks of one of his mentors. During his press conference Tuesday, Durkin called Meyer “one of the best to ever coach the game.”

Durkin again coached under Meyer in 2010 at Florida, where he remained on Will Muschamp’s staff after Meyer left. Durkin also spent time on Jim Harbaugh’s staff at both Stanford and Michigan, making him a disciple of Big Ten royalty.
