Miami is on its way to one of the best recruiting classes in the nation. David Wilson and the DieHards.com team are in the eye of the storm to help you track the Hurricanes. Georgia OLB Kevin Harris puts Miami in top 3 ahead of visit

Jess Simpson has been Miami’s defensive line coach for less than a month yet already his is showing the Hurricanes the benefits of hiring a Georgia high school legend.

A month ago, Kevin Harris didn’t have Miami on his radar. The 4-star outside linebacker was just a rising recruit then and, fresh off a visit to Clemson, he seemed to be favoring the Tigers. Everything changed during a whirlwind 48 hours. The Hurricanes offered March 8. So did Florida State and LSU. Alabama hopped in a day later.

Now three of the four are in Harris’ top 3: Miami, LSU and the Crimson Tide.

The first offer Simpson sent out as the Miami defensive line coach went back to his old home. Simpson, who won seven state titles coaching Atlanta-area power Buford High, offered the Grayson High (Loganville) star on March 8 and the assistant coach’s early impressions were enough to make Harris strongly consider the Hurricanes. Harris told Chad Simmons of Rivals.com he has a prior tie to Simpson, too.

“Me and Coach Simpson had a great talk and we really connected,” Harris said. “He coached with my head coach and I know he is a great coach. He really wants me to come down for a visit, so we are talking about setting that up. I would love to get down there soon.”

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound edge rusher will make it happen this weekend. Harris plans to travel down to Coral Gables, Fla., on Saturday for an unofficial visit as part of a junior day event.

In Miami’s 4-3 defense, Harris would likely wind up at defensive end, which could turn him into a major priority this cycle. The Hurricanes only signed two defensive ends in the Class of 2018 and one will move to linebacker. A versatile prospect such as Harris, an Under Armour All-American and the No. 9 player at his position in the 247Sports composite rankings, could immediately bolster Miami’s front seven if he were to sign.

A decision for Harris may not be far off, either. The rising senior has visits he needs to take, but by the end of the summer he may know his destination.

“I do not know exactly when I will commit, but I definitely want to have it behind me before my senior year,” Harris said. “I want to find the perfect school and then get everything handled.”

Miami makes top 7 for another Georgia defender

Harris isn’t the only Peach State front-seven prospect Miami seems to be well positioned with right now. Rashad Cheney Jr., another Under Armour All-American, also has the Hurricanes on his short list of top choices at this point. The 4-star defensive tackle from Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood named Miami to his top 7 last Thursday.

Cheney is a former Georgia commit and his new top list is a hodgepodge. The Hurricanes are competing with Georgia Tech, Florida, Alabama, Penn State, Minnesota and Georgia State.

The 6-4, 256-pound defensive tackle has yet to visit Miami and just reported an offer from the Hurricanes on Feb. 2. The Hurricanes’ defensive line board is still coming together, so it’s not exactly clear yet how much a priority Cheney will become, especially with such a long list of other schools he’s considering.
