Michael Pinckney takes starting role on Miami depth chart for Florida State

With the biggest game of the season so far on the horizon, the Miami depth chart has a few minor changes as the Hurricanes get ready to face Florida State. They seem like just clerical changes as two players who have been playing starter minutes for the first three games are now unquestioned atop the depth chart.

Michael Pinckney is now listed as Miami’s lone starter at weakside linebacker and Malek Young is now one of the Hurricanes’ starting cornerbacks. Both Pinckney and Young were listed with an “or” before ACC play opened Friday.

Pinckney was technically a co-starter alongside Mike Smith, who now slides into a co-backup spot behind Shaquille Quarterman at middle linebacker. Linebacker Darrion Owens is Pinckney’s lone backup.

At Young’s cornerback spot, the sophomore had been listed as a co-starter with defensive back Michael Jackson. Young is now the lone starter and Jackson is his sole backup.

The rest of Miami’s depth chart remains unchanged before Saturday’s game in Tallahassee, Fla. Even wide receiver Ahmmon Richards, who missed the first two games of the season before debuting Friday against Duke, still is a co-starter with Lawrence Cager at X-receiver. The sophomore still played relatively minutes in Durham, N.C.

The Hurricanes will also have Mark Walton, as expected. Coach Mark Richt quickly quelled doubts about the running back after he left Miami’s 31-6 win against the Blue Devils during the fourth quarter. The junior injured his ankle a week earlier against Toledo, but started against Duke. He’s on track to be in the starting lineup again against the Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium.
