A bye week for Michigan changed nothing for its position in the latest Land of 10 Power Poll. The Wolverines (4-0) remain third in voting by Land of 10 staff behind unanimous No. 1 Penn State (5-0) and No. 2 Ohio State (4-1) and ahead of No. 4 Wisconsin (4-0) as the top four teams in the Big Ten show separation from the rest of the conference.
Michigan returns to play on Saturday against in-state rival Michigan State (3-1), which is coming off a 17-10 win against Iowa. The Spartans already have matched their win total of 2016 and will seek to avenge a 32-23 win by the Wolverines last season in East Lansing. It was the second win for Michigan in the series in the last nine games.
Michigan moved up to No. 7 in the AP Top 25 Poll, equaling the spot it holds in the Amway Coaches Poll for a second consecutive week.
There has been no word on whether Wilton Speight will return from injury as the starting quarterback or if John O’Korn will get the call against Michigan State. Speight left the 28-10 win on Sept. 23 at Purdue late in the first quarter after being sacked by Markus Bailey. O’Korn replaced him, throwing for 270 yards and 1 touchdown. He led the Wolverines to touchdowns on all three of their red-zone possessions. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Speight would not have been available to play if Michigan had a game this weekend.
I voted Michigan No. 2 behind Penn State again in the latest poll. The Nittany Lions have shown themselves to be the most balanced team in the conference through the first five weeks, but if Michigan’s offense can continue playing as it did in the second half against Purdue, the Wolverines can beat any team on their schedule. The defense is playing as well as any in the country and has enabled Michigan to survive spotty offense so far.
