Should we expect Michigan to wear alternate uniforms this fall?
Here’s a proposal: Michigan should wear at least one alternate uniform each season, effective this fall.
As of right now, there are no plans for alternate uniforms in 2018, but that might change as the season gets closer.
Alternate uniforms continue to be in vogue in college football. The Wolverines can give the fans something to look forward to while giving college football a different sort of aesthetic energy once a year.
Ohio State has done it. In fact, the Buckeyes have worn some sort of modified uniform in several recent meetings with the Wolverines, including 2016 and 2017.
Michigan’s uniform is one of the most iconic in college football, and one of the more iconic in all of sports. It’s simple, streamlined and easily recognizable — from the maize and blue helmets to the blue jerseys and yellow pants that the Wolverines wear for home games.
The uniform will never undergo an overhaul, and Michigan will never rotate uniform schemes on a weekly basis the way Maryland does. But at the same time, changing up the uniforms is part of Maryland’s growing football brand.
You can’t change a brand that’s as recognizable as Coca-Cola or Google. But you can modify it. (For every New Coke there’s Coke Zero. For every Google Plus there’s Google Drive.)
The Wolverines can start Sept. 1, with a new uniform that celebrates the resurrection of the rivalry series against Notre Dame. Then retire the uniform as soon as the game is over.
A few suggestions for alternate uniform schemes:
- Khaki pants and blue jerseys, a la Jim Harbaugh and the Pittsburgh Steelers, who last wore khaki pants in 2016.
- An all-blue ensemble, similar to what the Denver Broncos once wore, with blue jerseys and blue pants.
- A maize jersey and blue pants. Flip the home-uniform color scheme.
But don’t touch the winged helmets. Those are iconic.
