Michigan releases contract terms for Jim McElwain

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan has released the contract information for Jim McElwain, who joined the Wolverines staff earlier this month.

McElwain’s contract terms, obtained by Land of 10 through an open-records request, state that McElwain will make $300,000 on a one-year contract as Michigan’s wide receivers coach.

McElwain agreed to the terms and signed a memorandum of understanding on Feb. 14. McElwain’s contract runs through Jan. 11, 2019. Michigan announced the hire of McElwain as its wide receivers coach on Feb. 20.

The memorandum of understanding between McElwain and Michigan states that if at any point his title changes to “coordinator,” Michigan will reassess his base salary. The memorandum of understanding also states that McElwain also will receive a bowl bonus at twice the rate of assistant football coaches at Michigan, or $50,000 (whichever amount is higher).

Florida parted ways with McElwain in October, after 2 1/2 seasons as Gators coach. Florida will pay McElwain a buyout of $7.5 million in six installments through July 1, 2021.

McElwain is one of three coaches whom the Wolverines added to their staff during the offseason.

Sherrone Moore, Michigan’s tight ends coach, will earn a base salary of $225,000 in 2018 and $250,000 in 2019.

Al Washington, a defensive assistant coach, will earn a base salary of $350,000 in 2018 and $375,000 in 2019.

Ed Warinner has not been formally named as an assistant. However, he updated his Twitter bio to read “Offensive Line Coach, University of Michigan.” Under his contract terms as an offensive analyst, Warinner will earn $20,833.33 monthly ($250,000 annually) through Jan. 18, 2020.
