Michigan State football signee Davion Williams declines basketball offer

It looks like Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio will have the full services of Davion Williams the next four years.

Williams, a three-star cornerback, also excels in basketball, but he tweeted Wednesday he will only be playing football for the Spartans.

Williams grew up loving both sports, and he originally gave up football to focus on basketball after eighth grade. But two years later, his interests changed again. He quit basketball and joined the Belleville High School football team before his junior year in 2016. He was receiving Division I offers less than a year later. In June of 2017, Williams pledged to the Spartans football program.

However, shortly after committing, Williams received another opportunity; coach Tom Izzo invited him to play basketball for the Spartans once the football season ended.

Despite the enticing offer, Williams has said previously he did not plan to play basketball in college, and he made that official on Wednesday. He’s the No. 48 cornerback in the country and the No. 9 prospect in Michigan for 2018, according to 247Sports.
