Oklahoma State kicker Matt Ammendola didn’t exactly have the best game of his career on Saturday night.
In what ultimately became a 41-34 Oklahoma State victory over Texas Tech, the sophomore missed a pair of chip-shot field goals from 22 yards and 18 yards. As a result, Mike Gundy was asked during Monday’s Big 12 teleconference about whether or not he has any plans on changing things at kicker.
“We’re not going to change anything,” Gundy said. “Matt’s the best guy. We’re going to put him out there and hopefully he’ll make them.”
Despite the misses, Ammendola did connect on a pair of attempts from 22 yards and then 27 yards. More notably, to reaffirm Gundy’s faith in Ammendola as the best guy for the job, the sophomore earned Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors following his Week 2 performance against South Alabama, in which he converted four of five field goals and all five extra attempts.
Oklahoma State will now enjoy a bye week before returning back to Boone Pickens Stadium for a showdown with winless Baylor on Oct. 14.
If the kicking woes drag over into that game, Gundy may once again be asked about his comfort level at kicker, but for now, Ammendola is still the top option.
