Mike Mayock calls Louisville QB Lamar Jackson ‘way outside-the-box choice’ for New England Patriots

Opinions on the draft stock for former Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson have seemingly been at one extreme or the other. But prior to Monday, no one had indicated he could be a target for the New England Patriots.

NFL draft analyst Mike Mayock did that in so many words during an NFL Network conference call on Monday.

When talking about the Patriots quarterback situation, Mayock said Bill Belichick would likely go the route of finding a quality choice in the second or third round. That’s where he found Jimmy Garroppolo, Jacoby Brissett and Ryan Mallet.

But Mayock didn’t rule out the Patriots selecting Jackson.

“The one way outside the box conversation (for New England) is Lamar Jackson. I think he’s the most electrifying player in this draft. I think somebody is going to take him and commit their offensive philosophy to him. And I would tell you the most concerned 31 people in the league would be the defensive coordinators that would have to play against him.”

Mayock has Jackson as his No. 5 quarterback on his position rankings. The NFL draft expert has USC’s Sam Darnold, Wyoming’s Josh Allen, UCLA’s Josh Rosen and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield ahead of the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner, but clearly, he’s much higher on Jackson then other analysts such as ESPN’s Bill Polian, who said Jackson should switch to wide receiver.

Regardless of who drafts Jackson, Mayock made it clear his NFL team can’t be afraid to embrace his style that ‘old-school’ NFL scouts have argued doesn’t translate from the college game.
