Minnesota football is favored by nearly two touchdowns because Maryland will be starting its third-string quarterback, Max Bortenschlager.
In the Terrapins’ season-opening victory over Texas, starting quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome went down with a torn ACL. Then, in the team’s third game on Sept. 23 against Central Florida, the Terrapins lost another quarterback in Kasim Hill. Hill tore his ACL as well.
Bortenschlager, who will be making his second career start, finished the game against Central Florida by going 15 of 26 for 132 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He was also sacked five times in the team’s 38-10 loss.
Bortenschlager’s first –and only other — start in his career came against Nebraska last year. The stat-line was fairly similar, as the then-freshman completed 14 of 29 passes for 191 yards while throwing a touchdown and an interception in the process.
Due to the injuries at quarterback, it is likely that Maryland will try to rely on its running game. Leading the attack on the ground will be junior running back Ty Johnson.
So far in 2017, Johnson has carried the ball 28 times for 281 yards and three touchdowns. If he can sustain his 10 yards per carry average, the Terrapins should have a lot of success against Minnesota. Against Central Florida, Johnson ran it 11 times for just 25 yards.
After Maryland scored 51 points against Texas and then 63 points against Towson, the team was off the week following, before scoring 10 points against Central Florida.
For the nearly two-touchdown favorite Minnesota Golden Gophers, first-year coach P.J. Fleck has seen a good amount of success in the Big Ten. Minnesota won a tight, 17-7 game against Buffalo to open the 2017 season.
After its win against the MAC opponent, however, the Golden Gophers outscored its next two opponents, 82-17. In the game following Buffalo, Fleck’s group beat Oregon State, 48-14. One week later, Minnesota beat Middle Tennessee, 34-3.
Senior quarterback Conor Rhoda has led the Golden Gophers so far this season with his 456 yards through the air while throwing two touchdowns to one interception. On the ground, Rodney Smith leads all Golden Gophers with his 69 carries, going for 275 yards and one touchdown.
Alongside Smith, however, is Shannon Brooks. Brooks has only carried the ball 35 times, but boasts a better yards per carry average (4.6 to Smith’s 4.0) and has scored four touchdowns this season. Kobe McCrary has also scored three times while averaging 4.5 yards per carry on just 24 touches.
Wide receiver Tyler Johnson is the only Golden Gophers player to catch a touchdown pass this season as he has done it twice. Johnson leads the team in receiving with 282 yards this season and 12 catches. The next highest on the team come from Demetrius Douglas, who has 83 yards on 11 catches.
Minnesota and Maryland have only played each other twice previously, with both schools winning once. In last year’s matchup, the Golden Gophers won 31-10 at Maryland in Rhoda’s first career start.
