Missouri’s third annual #RallyForRhyan game raises over $70K for pediatric cancer research

For the third consecutive year, the Missouri Tigers not only won on #RallyForRhyan day at Mizzou Arena, they set a new bar for pediatric cancer research donations.

According to Missouri’s Major Gifts Officer Brad Loos — the father of Rhyan Loos, for whom the game is named — Saturday’s basketball game raised over $70,000 for pediatric cancer research:

That $70,000 figure topped the $55,000 figure from 2017, which topped the $50,000 figure from the inaugural game in 2016. Plus, as previously stated, the Tigers emerged victorious for the third straight year — meaning Rhyan Loos remains undefeated — by scraping by Mississippi State 89-85 in overtime.

Even factoring in the money raised, the best news of the day was an update on Rhyan’s health. After being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, neuroblastoma, when she was 5-years-old in late 2015 — just months after her father started his job as an assistant coach on the since-departed Kim Anderson’s staff — Rhyan underwent multiple surgeries and chemotherapy over the past two-plus years.

However, according to the halftime speech given by her father, Rhyan has shown no signs of cancer for the past several months and is feeling much healthier.

After Anderson’s firing (which obviously also meant that Loos lost his job), it was unclear whether or not the school would continue the Rally for Rhyan game tradition. However, once Cuonzo Martin — a cancer survivor himself — was hired, and Loos transitioned to a new role within the athletic department, it seemed clear that the game would see a third edition, although it was not officially announced until a couple of weeks before the Mississippi State game.

Missouri raised money in a variety of ways during the game. The school offered a 50/50 raffle, with half of the proceeds going to research, in addition to t-shirts, wristbands, and more. All told, the game, and the proceeds that came out of it, probably exceeded expectations.

Now the challenge is raising the bar once again in 2019.
