NCAA ‘maybe the worst organization’ in sports, says Stan Van Gundy

The NCAA is in the news again, and not for a good reason. A Yahoo! Sports report detailed a list of current and former Division I basketball players who received payments from former NBA agent Andy Miller and his associates at ASM Sports , a scandal that could violate the NCAA’s amateurism rules.

With that as a backdrop, Detroit Pistons president and coach Stan Van Gundy, a former assistant and head coach at Wisconsin, called out the NCAA on Sunday, according to the Charlotte Observer’s Rick Bonnell.

“The NCAA is one of the worst organizations, maybe  the worst organization, in sports. They certainly don’t care about the athletes,” Van Gundy said.

Van Gundy was an assistant at Wisconsin from 1992-94, before taking over the program for the 1994-95 season. He then began his NBA career with the Miami Heat, and he’s been a prominent professional coach ever since.

Still, he has no shortage of opinions on the NCAA. He called out college presidents, saying they were “all about the money.”

“The men’s basketball tournament is making huge money and funding the rest of the budget for the NCAA. They don’t want that to go. They want to keep these great players coming in.”

Former Maryland forward Diamond Stone, who went to the NBA after his freshman year, received $14,303, according to documents Yahoo! Sports obtained. Michigan State sophomore Miles Bridges’ mom was also implicated.

Van Gundy said much of the NCAA’s issues come from the “one-and-done” rule, which mandates that men’s basketball players can’t enter the NBA Draft until age 19.

“You can turn 18, and go to work anywhere else,” Van Gundy said. “I think a lot of it was racist, quite frankly. I’ve never heard anybody be up in arms about letting kids (of the same age) play minor-league baseball. Or they’re letting these kids come out and play minor-league hockey. They’re making (little) money, and they’re white kids, mostly.

“You’ve got a black kid wanting to come out of high school and make millions, and that’s a bad decision?”
