Nebraska’s Bob Diaco: Chris Jones ‘looks really good’ ahead of Wisconsin game

Chris Jones is getting closer and closer to returning to the field for Nebraska. Coaches like what they see from the senior cornerback, though it’s still not quite clear if he’ll be able to play against Wisconsin on Saturday.

Nebraska defensive coordinator Bob Diaco addressed the issue in his Tuesday press conference.

“Trying not to get overly excited, just because we as an organization don’t want to put undue pressure on him. But he looks really good. Quick, big, fast, smart. Making great choices, stayed in his books. The hand signals, the calls, the process, the checks, the things in-play that might take a little while to connect the dots, he’s doing a nice job.

“He’s really looked good these past few days.”

A reporter asked Diaco if Jones will be able to go on Saturday against Wisconsin:

“It’s really entirely up to him. I don’t have an opinion on that. I think the whole team is letting him drive his own timing and tempo.”

Jones hinted that he was close to a return after tearing his meniscus in the offseason.

Head coach Mike Riley cautioned against Jones’ availability on Monday.

“Being cleared and being ready from practice to game are two different things,” Riley told reporters.

Other notes from Diaco’s availability:

Diaco said not much has changed with Wisconsin over the years. In a positive way:

“Not much has changed since ’94-95. Big. Strong. Cohesive. One unit. Everybody knows their jobs. Big tackle-breaking runners, excellent tight ends. Just a strong offense.”
