Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason and Jason Tarver, the Commodores’ new defensive coordinator, have an interesting living arrangement.
Turns out, Mason and Tarver are temporary housemates. Tarver, who worked with Mason at Stanford and is a long-time friend of the coach, is living in a spare bedroom above Mason’s garage until the rest of his family moves to Nashville. Tarver spent the last three seasons as a senior defensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers before joining Vanderbilt’s staff this offseason.
Here’s more from a story by The Tennessean’s Adam Sparks:
Mason and Tarver are also housemates, at least temporarily. Tarver, who was hired in February, is living in the spare bedroom above Mason’s garage until his wife and two sons move to Nashville.
“Over the last six years, Derek and I have spoken more than, well, maybe second only to talking to our own wives,” Tarver said. “There were some negotiations in my contract, and part of that was I get to spend some time with (Mason) because I really wanted to learn everything about Vanderbilt, from off the field to on the field.”
That’s a solid move by Mason to allow Tarver to live as a temporary guest. It’s clear the men are comfortable being around each other, and their current situation should help with chemistry as Tarver continues to acclimate himself to his new professional situation.
Vanderbilt struggled on defense during a disappointing 5-7 season last year. Mason is hoping Tarver’s perspective improves Vanderbilt’s performance on that side of the ball as the Commodores try to produce their second bowl appearance in three years.
