According to multiple sources. the NHL and the Chicago Blackhawks are in discussion with Notre Dame about hosting an outdoor league hockey game at Notre Dame Stadium.
This was first reported by Chicago Tribune reporters Chris Hine and Teddy Greenstein, and their source added there’s a good chance the Blackhawks will playing in South Bend, Indiana, either in 2019 or later against a potential Original Six franchise. Some of the scenarios discussed includes the NHL’s Winter Classic, which is played on New Year’s Day, or the game could become part of the league’s Stadium Series format.
Recently, Notre Dame completed their $ 400 million Campus Crossroads Project around the football stadium with hopes of hosting other events other than football games.
“Once the Campus Crossroads project is finished, we do anticipate that Notre Dame Stadium will be an excellent venue for more than just Notre Dame football games, but no additional events have yet been scheduled,” Swarbrick said to the Tribune in a Feb. 2016 interview, “And while we would certainly have an interest in exploring the possibility of playing host to outdoor hockey games, we have not had any discussions with the NHL about doing so.”
The Blackhawks have played in five NHL outdoor game, the most of any other franchise, including one at the famed Wrigley Field (2009) and another at Soldier Field (2014). Last January, they traveled to St. Louis to play in the 2017 Winter Classic against the St. Louis Blues at Busch Stadium.
