North Carolina-Georgia Tech preview, keys to the game

After winning eight games a year ago, North Carolina has struggled early in 2017 with losses against Cal, Louisville and Duke and the lone victory coming on the road against overmatched Old Dominion.

If you factor in that the Tar Heels lost three of their final four contests last season, after starting out 7-2, you’re looking at six losses in eight games for Larry Fedora’s squad.

North Carolina’s upcoming stretch of games includes at Georgia Tech, home against Notre Dame and Virginia, on the road at Virginia Tech and then home against Miami. Those schools are a combined 14-3 going into their Week 5 games, so it’s important for the Tar Heels to turn things around quickly, beginning with this week’s game in Atlanta.

Quarterback Chazz Surratt, a redshirt freshman, has done some good things so far this season, completing 64.3 percent of his passes for 847 yards, with 5 touchdowns against 1 interception, and has run for 117 yards and 4 scores.

Georgia Tech, which went 9-4 a year ago, is 6-1 in its last seven games and played well enough to have a chance to beat Tennessee in the season opener.

The Yellow Jackets rolled over Pitt last week, rushing 67 times for 436 yards and 5 touchdowns in their 35-17 home victory.

KirVonte Benson, a redshirt sophomore running back, rushed for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns on 29 carries — all career-bests — while quarterback TaQuon Marshall ran for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns and threw for 48 yards.

For the season, Marshall has run for a team-high 386 yards and 8 touchdowns and also thrown for 280 yards and 3 more scores. Benson has rushed for 346 yards and 3 touchdowns.

As a team Georgia Tech is averaging 393.7 rushing yards per game at an impressive 5.88 yards per carry. The Yellow Jackets lead the ACC in rushing yardage per game and are second in yards-per-carry average, behind only a Miami (9.52) team that has played just twice.

Through its first four games, North Carolina has allowed an average of 176.5 rushing yards per game — the 12th most among 14 ACC teams — and 4.5 yards per rushing attempt, which also ranks 12th in the ACC.
