Here we discuss a new offer from Roy Williams for 4-star 2019 PF/C Will Baker and the official visit date of 4-star linebacker target Dax Hollifield.

North Carolina offers Will Baker

Following last week’s bombshell news from the FBI regarding arrests tied to corruption and money laundering in college basketball recruiting, some recruiting news may have gotten lost or fallen by the wayside.

Among the more interesting stories from last week that didn’t make it to the forefront was Roy Williams doing something he hadn’t done in a month — handing out an offer.

Wednesday night, the team director for Texas AAU team Basketball U, Rhossi Carron, confirmed to Scout’s Sherrell McMillan that 4-star power forward/center Will Baker received an offer from Williams.

His school, Westlake High School in Austin also confirmed the scholarship offer, which came with Williams in Texas to visit with Baker.

Baker, rated as the No. 5 center and No. 24 overall player by 247Sports composite rankings, is just the ninth player to receive an offer from North Carolina in the Class of 2019.

“He can play with his back to the basket, he can step out to 15 feet, make shots and he can also pick-and-pop out to the NBA three-point line,” Carron told McMillan. “You typically don’t see guys with that skill, with that size at that age. For him, he has to continue to get stronger and he has to get more game experience. He’s really versatile and he’s a lot more athletic than most 6-10, 6-11 guys, who can be kind of clunky.”

Of those nine players, six are back-court players and five of those stand at 6-foot-9 or taller and project as power forwards at the next level. Depending on how he grows over the next two years, Baker could end up at either power forward or center.

Baker is already up to 12 offers including Auburn, Baylor, Oklahoma, Stanford and Texas.

Dax Hollifield to take October official visit

Dax Hollifield, a 4-star linebacker out of Shelby, N.C., is arguably the top remaining target for Larry Fedora and his staff for the Class of 2018.

The in-state product has been on campus numerous times over the course of his recruitment, but the last couple of weekends have seen him going other places, including Virginia Tech on an unofficial visit on Sept. 29 and Florida State on Sept. 22 for his first official visit.

With recent news, though, the Tar Heels will no longer be wondering when the state’s No. 5 player will be back on campus. According to 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong, Hollifield will take his official visit to Chapel Hill on Oct. 14 for the game against Virginia. He’ll take two other official visits in October — one to South Carolina this weekend and one to Virginia Tech on Oct.  21. He’ll also officially visit Stanford, although he’ll wait until Jan. 12 for that.

North Carolina is considered the favorite for the nation’s No. 5 inside linebacker and No. 126 overall player, although his commitment is far from a certainty. A commitment from Hollifield would give North Carolina three of the top five rated players in the state along with 4-star outside linebacker Payton Wilson and 4-star receiver Jordyn Adams.
