North Carolina is on the right path to repeating as college basketball’s national champion.
The NCAA Selection Committee placed the Tar Heels as a three-seed in the West Region, which will be hosted in Los Angeles, and No. 12 team in the country in the Top 16 bracket reveal on Sunday.
The Tar Heels are coming off a big week in which they defeated No. 9 Duke, 82-78, on Thursday and followed that up with a 96-89 victory over North Carolina State, which is listed as an 11th seed in Joe Lunardi’s latest ESPN Bracketology update, on Saturday.
UNC also racked up quality victories over top-50 RPI teams Arkansas, Michigan, Tennessee, Ohio State and Clemson, which was also ranked as a three-seed in the XX Region by the selection committee.
It is a positive sign for North Carolina, given the success that the committee had in predicting the actual outcome of tournament seeding in its first year of unveiling a top 16 in mid-February last season. Fifteen of the 16 teams were the same a year ago, with the only exception being Virginia being in instead of Purdue.
