North Texas’ AD is not pleased ESPN referred to Michigan State as ‘mean green’ in commercial

The Mean Green athletic director is not playing nice with ESPN over a misstep in a commercial promoting this Saturday’s Michigan-Michigan State game.

In an ad, ESPN refers to Michigan State as “mean green.” That is the nickname of all North Texas sports teams, and apparently a trademarked phrase. North Texas athletic director Wren Baker noticed the use of the phrase and tweeted that a “cease and desist letter is on the way.”

ESPN had not publicly responded to Baker as of Tuesday night.

Michigan hosts Michigan State on Saturday night at the Big House with ESPN broadcasting the game. It’s probably for the best if they just call them the Spartans.
