Notre Dame-Miami (OH) preview, keys to the game
When the Fighting Irish and the RedHawks hit the field, it will be a homecoming for RedHawks coach Chuck Martin. Martin grew up a Notre Dame fan and served as an assistant on Brian Kelly’s staff from 2010-2013 before being hired as the head coach at Miami (OH). Kelly and Martin go back farther than that: the latter worked under the former at Division II heavyweight Grand Valley State from 2004-2009 before Kelly left for Central Michigan. Martin succeeded Kelly as head coach, amassing a record of 74-7 – including a 40-game winning streak spanning three seasons and a pair of national championships.
With all that being said, despite the strides the RedHawks have made under Martin, Notre Dame should have no problem putting their opponent away on Saturday. Things are primed for a big game from Brandon Wimbush, who has a potential to showcase his dual threat capabilities. The junior threw for 173 yards and rushed for 52 more last Saturday at Michigan State. Despite the RedHawks’ defense that has allowed just nineteen points a game over the first four contests of 2017, this will easily be their toughest foe of the season after having faced Marshall, FCS Austin Peay, Cincinnati and Central Michigan thus far.
One question for the Fighting Irish will be in regards to the status of running back Josh Adams. Adams was held out of last Saturday’s game as a precaution, so his health will be an area of focus. The junior has recorded 65 carries for 499 yards and two touchdowns thus far in the 2017 season.
Most importantly for the Irish, it will be key for them to take care of an opponent they should handle easily before the season takes a turn. After a trip to North Carolina next Saturday, Notre Dame hosts Southern Cal, NC State and Wake Forest in South Bend. The team is out to prove that they are better than what they showed against Georgia earlier in the season, and coming out of this next stretch unscathed will go a long way in doing that.
