No matter what happens this spring, Notre Dame veterans Alex Bars and Julian Love are going to be relied upon to provide great leadership for the program this fall.
However, with a fourth captaincy on the line this spring, the competitive juices are flowing and that’s probably exactly what Brian Kelly hoped for when he named three captains before spring and left the final spot to be decided at its conclusion.
The Irish were back for their third practice of spring on Tuesday after a little over a week off for spring break and both Love and Bars were available to the media. And both made it clear that they wanted to earn that captain’s role, according to reports from Mike Vorel of the South Bend Tribune.
“There’s nothing more in the world that I want than to get that fourth spot,” Bars said.
Love was slightly more reserved, promising to provide leadership whether he had the “C” sewn onto his jersey or not. However, the competitive atmosphere created by the desire to go down in history as a Notre Dame captain is certainly good for the program.
Linebacker Drue Tranquill, center Sam Mustipher and punter Tyler Newsome have already been given their captaincies.
