Ohio State’s quarterback competition is between Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow, right? Right? Not so fast, said Buckeyes co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Ryan Day.
“Really, whoever is playing the best is going to play. Anybody who is playing at quarterback, if he’s the best quarterback, he’s going to play. It’s not just a two-person race. Whoever is out there moving the team down the field is going to play. Obviously the guys are competing and working with that,” Day said.
To this point, it was widely expected the successor to J.T. Barrett would be either Haskins or Burrow, with Tate Martell, the redshirt freshman, seen as to raw to compete. Day’s comments suggest otherwise.
Martell, a 4-star recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite, was the odd man out last season. Haskins served as Barrett’s primary backup and showed promise: He finished the season 40-of-57 for 565 yards and 4 touchdowns against 1 interception. Burrow went 7-of-11 in even less playing time.
The Ohio State coaching staff has not been shy in its admiration for Martell, though. In February, coach Urban Meyer said Martell had “grown as much as any player I can remember.”
Spring practice is upon us, meaning the Buckeyes are finally getting a chance to see their three quarterbacks up close. And if Day’s comments are any indication, Ohio State fans shouldn’t rule out seeing more of Martell once fall rolls around.
“Nothing is predetermined, there’s not a guy who has been the starter who has been here before, it’s a competition like anywhere else who doesn’t have a quarterback coming back. These guys have to work for everything they get,” Day said.
