Rutgers’ first touchdown on Saturday against Ohio State was going to be the Scarlet Knights’ first score on the Buckeyes since 2015. The Buckeyes won last year’s matchup 58-0, and Rutgers scored once in a 49-7 loss the year before that. But that touchdown never came, and Ohio State won this year’s game 56-0.
Ohio State’s win was assured at halftime when the game was 35-0. This wasn’t close, which means it was exactly like every other game Ohio State and Rutgers have played recently.
Ohio State has outscored Rutgers 219-24 in four games since the Scarlet Knights joined the Big Ten. This hasn’t been a fair fight, plain and simple.
2014: Ohio State 56, Rutgers 17
2015: Ohio State 49, Rutgers 7
2016: Ohio State 58, Rutgers 0
Here are a few other outrageous Ohio State-Rutgers stats just from these last two games:
Total yards: Ohio State: 56, Rutgers: 22
First downs: Ohio State: 1,297, Rutgers: 325
These blowouts haven’t just come against Ohio State. Rutgers was a Big Ten East doormat last season.
Rutgers got hit hard when it played ranked teams last season. The Scarlet Knights fell by a margin of 288-40 to Big Ten East foes in 2016, and while 2017 started off promisingly with a close game against Playoff contender Washington, things haven’t been good for Rutgers since. After losing to Washington, Rutgers gave Eastern Michigan its first-ever win over an FBS school, beat FCS Morgan State 65-0 and lost to Nebraska in a close-enough 27-17 game. The rest of the Big Ten East is coming, and that spells trouble for the Scarlet Knights. Here’s how Rutgers fared against Big Ten East teams last season, game-by-game:
Oct. 1: Ohio State 58, Rutgers 0
Oct. 8: Michigan 78, Rutgers o
Nov. 5: Indiana 33, Rutgers 27
Nov. 12: Michigan State 49, Rutgers 0
Nov. 19: Penn State 39, Rutgers 0
Nov. 26: Maryland 31, Rutgers 13
Losing to Ohio State by a margin similar to last season doesn’t paint a happy picture for the Scarlet Knights going forward.
