Ohio State-Rutgers preview, keys to the game

1. Chipping away

This might come as a surprise, but here are the first-quarter scores of Ohio State’s previous three games against Rutgers: 14-7, 7-0, 6-0. The final scores: 56-17, 49-7, 58-0. So while the Buckeyes have started slow against the Scarlet Knights, they’ve gotten things into gear eventually. It’s a similar phenomenon to what occurred in the Indiana game at the start of the 2017 season. Over the course of four quarters, superior athletes are going to find ways to make plays. It’s hard for outmatched opponents to shut down the Buckeyes for an entire game. If the Buckeyes struggle early, they would be well-served to keep trying to get the ball to playmakers in space. Eventually the hits will come, as history has shown.

2. Mike Weber’s role

Urban Meyer has said that running back Mike Weber will play against the Scarlet Knights. To what extent remains unclear. How Weber is used — and how healthy he truly is — could help determine the way this game is played. It could be a scenario where the Buckeyes try to get him and J.K. Dobbins 10-15 carries each, perhaps reducing J.T. Barrett’s running load. Or Weber could be used situationally. If he’s good to go, his power combined with Dobbins’ explosiveness could make it a long night for Rutgers. If he gets only 3-4 carries, that’s one less problem for the Knights to worry about.

3. Big plays

The Buckeyes pass defense remains under fire from coaches and fans alike. However, the Buckeyes did play better against UNLV despite penalties, allowing fewer than 100 passing yards. With that being said, the cornerbacks and safeties still have work to do to get to where they need to be. And specifically for this game, Ohio State needs to make sure it avoids allowing the big plays that can keep underdogs hanging around against better teams.
