Oklahoma — and mostly any sports team — will tell you it takes everything one week at a time and won’t be looking ahead to games down the schedule.
The Sooners have a big one on Oct. 14 against Texas in Dallas, but before the Red River Showdown, they have to get past 2-2 Iowa State on Saturday.
It’s head coach Lincoln Riley’s first time preparing for a game the week before Oklahoma-Texas, and the old sports cliché of “looking ahead to next week” might be worrying a few fans.
Fear not, however, the Sooners under Oklahoma’s last head coach Bob Stoops have actually been great at not letting any trap games sneak up on them the week before they play Texas and, as smooth as the transition from Stoops to Riley has been, expect more of the same if history is any indicator.
Oklahoma lost to Notre Dame the week before Oklahoma-Texas during Stoops’ first year as head coach in 1999. It’d only be 1 of 3 times Oklahoma was dealt a loss, however, the week before facing the Longhorns.
Stoops was 15-3 the week before Oklahoma-Texas during his run as head coach, and outside of 1999, the Sooners bounced back with a win over the Longhorns the week after losing to Colorado in 2007 and TCU in 2014.
Here is a more in-depth look at how Oklahoma’s been the week before the Red River Showdown:
|1999||at Notre Dame||L 34-30|
|2001||Kansas State||W 38-37|
|2002||at Missouri||W 31-24|
|2003||at Iowa State||W 53-7|
|2004||Texas Tech||W 28-13|
|2005||Kansas State||W 43-21|
|2006||Middle Tenn. State||W 59-0|
|2007||at Colorado||L 27-24|
|2008||at Baylor||W 49-17|
|2010||at Cincinnati||W 31-29|
|2011||Ball State||W 62-2|
|2012||at Texas Tech||W 41-20|
|2014||at TCU||L 37-33|
|2015||West Virginia||W 44-24|
|2016||at TCU||W 52-46|
It’s worth noting, none of Stoops losses a week prior to facing the Longhorns came on Owen Field. That should be good news as Oklahoma and Iowa State prepare for a noon ET kickoff in Norman, Okla., on Saturday.
